Venture Capital Deal Volumes Up 12% Most Canadian Deals Since 2005

2014 was the best year for Canadian venture capital financing in over a decade
According to data recently released by Thomson Reuters, Canadian companies received over $2.36 billion in 2014, a 21% increase from 2013, and nearly doubling the $1.2 billion invested just five years ago in 2000. During the year, Canadian companies received 522 rounds of financing, up 12% from the 468 financing in 2013 and resulting in the most Canadian venture capital deals completed since 2005.
In this environment, we are seeing is a new class of maturing businesses reaching the stage where their growing market opportunity is now being matched by growing external investments.

As an active venture capital investor, Kensington sees increasingly attractive opportunities in this robust and growing sector:

  • The Kensington Private Equity Fund completed investments in 5 emerging technology companies in 2014.
  • In mid-November, we launched the Kensington Venture Fund with a first close of $160 million of investor commitments. This Fund has already completed four underlying investments of its own.

The Kensington Venture Fund was established under the Government of Canada’s Venture Capital Action Plan, and represents a unique opportunity for investors to participate in this sector. Please contact us if you would like additional information.
